Proactive vs Reactive Fall Prevention

When it comes to fall prevention, there are two types: Proactive and Reactive.

There are many distinct differences to each.

One is a strategy, while the other is essentially playing the lottery with your physical well-being. 

Typically, fall prevention as a concept isn’t on anybody’s radar until a fall has already happened. Only once family members or friends see how devastating and life-changing falls can be first hand do they act. This is reactive fall prevention.  

Today our goal is to introduce the other side of the spectrum – Proactive fall prevention. 

Unfortunately, falls are a grim reality and almost inevitable for those over the age of 65. It might not be today, it might not be next week, but eventually, it will most likely happen. I’m sure that you’ve heard the shocking stats by now, but in case you haven’t… 

More than 1.6 million Canadian seniors fall each year. That’s almost 30% of the entire senior population every single year! While just under half of these falls result in serious injuries; what’s worse is that almost 20% of those over 65 who fall will die within a year of a fall. [1]

Our goal here is not to scare you, but to help get you thinking about how you can help ensure that your loved ones (or you) do not become part of these statistics.

 

Proactive Fall Prevention

Proactive fall prevention is preparing to age in place by making necessary changes to your lifestyle and home environment in order to protect yourself and your loved ones from disaster before it happens.

So what can we do to modify our lifestyle and make our living environments safer?

 

  1. Stay active.

Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of falls by strengthening leg and core muscles which are used to help stabilize the body. Even light exercise such as walking/jogging or tai chi work! [2]

 

      2. Schedule an in-home assessment with an Occupational Therapist.

This is a great option if you do not know where to start. They will make the appropriate recommendations about home modifications that can be done to reduce risk as well as simple tips and tricks.

      3. Install home safety products.
